Myrtle Beach and Georgetown Face Coastal Flood Advisory Until Friday Morning

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood advisory for the Myrtle Beach area and Coastal Georgetown. The advisory is valid from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, following an announcement made at 12:56 a.m. on the same day.

Coastal Flood Advisory Details

According to the NWS, low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways could experience up to half a foot of inundation above ground level. This advisory is based on average tide conditions, but additional locations may be affected by heavy rainfall or strong winds.

Areas at Risk

  • Local causeways to and from beaches may see minor coastal flooding.
  • Low-lying roads along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks could also be affected.

Travel and Safety Recommendations

Residents and visitors are urged to check with local officials for updated information regarding potential coastal flooding and road closures. If travel is necessary, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. NWS advises against driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

Flood Safety Tips

  • If you are in a flood-prone or low-lying area, move to higher ground immediately.
  • Evacuate if instructed to do so.
  • Secure your home and disconnect utilities if time allows.

Driving in Rain

Heavy rainfall can lead to hazardous driving conditions, especially in flood-prone regions. Here are some tips for safe driving:

  • Always turn on headlights to improve visibility.
  • Drive in the middle lanes where water collects less.
  • Avoid puddles and flooded zones. If you encounter flooding, turn back.

Understanding Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle loses traction on wet roads. It is caused by three factors: vehicle speed, water depth, and tire tread depth. To avoid hydroplaning:

  • Slow down in wet conditions.
  • Ensure your tires are in good condition.

If you find yourself hydroplaning, remember to ease off the accelerator, steer into the skid to regain control, and brake gently as needed.
