Hufnagel Becomes Argonauts Adviser After Calgary Success

John Hufnagel, a celebrated figure in Canadian football, is now part of the Toronto Argonauts. The team announced his appointment as a special adviser to the general manager and head coach on Thursday. Hufnagel, a five-time Grey Cup champion, is best recognized for his impressive tenure with the Calgary Stampeders.
Achievements and History
Hufnagel boasts over 50 years of experience as both a player and coach. His accolades include:
- Two-time CFL Coach of the Year
- One Super Bowl ring
- Induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2020
His successful era with the Stampeders began in 2008 when he became head coach and general manager. Under his leadership, Calgary secured the Grey Cup in his first season, earning him the Annis Stukus Trophy as Coach of the Year. He repeated this success in 2014 when Calgary won another CFL championship and he clinched his second coach of the year award.
Moving to Toronto
Although leaving Calgary is bittersweet for Hufnagel, he expressed excitement for this new opportunity with the Argonauts. “I’m very proud of what we accomplished in Calgary since my return in 2008,” he remarked. His tenure with Calgary included overseeing the team’s run to three consecutive Grey Cups from 2016 to 2018, winning the title in 2018.
Hufnagel’s coaching role transitioned to Dave Dickenson after the 2015 season, yet he continued to serve as general manager until 2022. He also held the position of club president from 2016 to 2023. Dickenson acknowledged Hufnagel’s significant impact, stating the team had been fortunate to benefit from his leadership.
Role with the Argonauts
As a senior adviser, Hufnagel is set to provide mentorship to both Argonauts’ general manager Mike Clemons and rookie head coach Mike Miller. Clemons regarded Hufnagel as a “leader” who will play a crucial role in various team functions, including:
- League meetings
- Preparations for the combine and draft
- Pre-game and post-game analysis
The Argonauts are making significant changes, especially following the departure of Miller’s predecessor, Ryan Dinwiddie.
A Legacy in Football
Hufnagel began his career as a quarterback after being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1973 from Penn State. His journey in the CFL included stints with Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, contributing to the Blue Bombers’ Grey Cup victory in 1984.
His coaching career commenced in 1987, building a legacy that spanned various teams, including notable roles in the NFL where he coached legends like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Hufnagel’s success culminated in a Super Bowl win with the New England Patriots in 2003.
The Argonauts, with Hufnagel’s expertise, are poised for a promising future in Canadian football.
