Former Enloe Teacher, 32, Leads Wake School Board as Chair

Tyler Swanson, at just 32 years old, has made history as the youngest individual to lead the Wake County School Board. Elected unanimously on December 2, 2025, Swanson previously served as the board’s vice chair. His ascension comes after Chris Heagarty, the former chair, completed the maximum two-year term allowed by board policy.
Career Background of Tyler Swanson
Swanson’s journey in education began as a special education teacher at Enloe High School, where he taught for three years until 2021. He transitioned to political activism, working with the North Carolina NAACP and later becoming a campaign strategist for nonprofit organizations. His political engagement spans over a decade, including notable participation in the Moral Monday protests in 2013.
Election to School Board
In 2022, Swanson won his seat on the Wake County School Board for District 9, a position that covers much of Cary. His victory followed a nonpartisan election where he was endorsed by the Democratic Party. He received strong support for his advocacy on important educational issues, including funding for public schools and opposition to private school vouchers.
New Leadership Structure
On the same day Swanson was elected chair, Sam Hershey, also a member of the board since 2022, was appointed vice chair. Hershey, 48, has a background in small business and community engagement, including being a stay-at-home father and officiating athletic events.
Board Dynamics
- Swanson and Hershey received six votes each during their elections.
- Two Republican members, Cheryl Caulfield and Wing Ng, abstained from voting.
- Abstentions are counted as yes votes according to board policy.
Ng expressed concerns regarding transparency in the board’s recent decision-making, referring to the appointment of Jennifer Job to a vacant position on the board. He emphasized the importance of trust within the leadership structure.
The Road Ahead
As Wake County Public Schools approaches a milestone 50th anniversary, Swanson has expressed his commitment to continue focusing on teaching and learning. He aims to build on the legacy established over the past decades while navigating the challenges ahead for public education.
With a fresh leadership team in place, the Wake County School Board looks towards a future that demands dedication to educational integrity and community trust.
