Riders can access the autonomous Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles through the familiar Uber app. Users will receive notifications if an autonomous ride is assigned. Importantly, riders can choose to decline the robotaxi or adjust settings to increase their chances of getting one.

The robotaxi service operates within a designated nine-square-mile area that includes Downtown, Uptown, Turtle Creek, and Deep Ellum. This region may expand as Uber plans to grow both the service area and the fleet size.

Initially, a human safety monitor will be present in the driver’s seat during rides. This gradual introduction of the service is designed to prioritize rider safety. Avride’s robotaxis are equipped with advanced technology, including:

These vehicles allow passengers to view real-time maps and control aspects of their ride via a large internal display.
Safety Record and Future Plans
Historically, autonomous taxis demonstrate enhanced safety records. A study by Waymo revealed that its robotaxis significantly reduce accident rates compared to human drivers. Avride has also reported minimal incidents, with only two crashes noted in 2025.
