Electric Vehicles Achieve Nearly 100% Registration Record in November

November 2023 was a landmark month for electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Norway, according to the latest report from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV). A total of 19,427 EVs were registered, representing a remarkable uptick in the market.
Record EV Registrations in November
With 19,899 new car registrations overall, November marked the highest sales month of the year and one of the most successful periods in Norwegian automotive history. The share of electric vehicles in total new registrations reached an impressive 97.6%, continuing the trend seen throughout 2023.
Significant Growth Compared to Previous Months
- October 2023: 10,852 EVs registered
- November 2022: 10,940 EVs registered
This November’s figures represent an increase of 8,575 EVs compared to October and 8,487 compared to the same month last year. Other types of powertrains now make up less than 1% of the market, showcasing the growing dominance of electric vehicles.
Factors Driving the Surge
Several factors contributed to this record-setting performance in November:
- Anticipated tax changes in 2024.
- Attractive discounts offered by manufacturers.
- Improved availability of affordable electric vehicles.
- Gradual recovery of the economy.
Geir Inge Stokke, the managing director of OFV, noted the impact of uncertainty surrounding upcoming tax regulations on consumer behavior. Many potential buyers accelerated their purchases to take advantage of existing conditions before changes take effect.
Tesla Leads the Market
Tesla maintained a dominant position, achieving a market share of 31.2% with 6,215 new registrations. This strong performance helped Tesla exceed its annual registration record of 26,641 vehicles set in 2023.
As of November 2023, Tesla has registered 28,606 vehicles this year, potentially edging toward 30,000 registrations by year-end.
Other Notable Brands
Following Tesla, several other brands showed significant growth:
- Volkswagen: 2,198 vehicles
- Volvo: 1,867 vehicles
- BMW: 1,104 vehicles
While these traditional brands performed well, Chinese manufacturers like BYD, MG, and XPeng have also seen increasing volumes in the mid-size SUV market.
Popular Models in November
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling model, though it logged 3,648 units. The Model 3 followed closely with 2,562 registrations. Other competitive models included:
- Volvo EX40: 916 units
