Craig Carton Set to Host WFAN’s Afternoon Drive Slot: Sources

Craig Carton is preparing to take over WFAN’s afternoon drive-time slot in early 2024, according to sources involved in the negotiations. This development represents Carton’s third engagement with the station and marks his second term leading the afternoon programming.

Changes to WFAN’s Lineup

The current afternoon show, hosted by Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber, will transition to the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. midday slot. Carton will bring a new partner onboard, with Chris McMonigle, the overnight host, being the front-runner for the role.

Additionally, the existing midday program led by Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata will be removed from the schedule. WFAN has opted not to comment on these changes.

Carton’s Track Record

Craig Carton has been known for generating strong ratings throughout his career. His candid style has garnered attention in an increasingly competitive media environment. He will also continue with his mid-morning podcast, produced by Fox’s Red Seat Ventures.

Background and Context

Carton has a long-standing professional relationship with Audacy New York president Chris Oliviero, who oversees WFAN and has played a pivotal role in all of Carton’s appointments at the station. Following Keith McPherson’s recent departure from WFAN, Licata may find a new opportunity within the station. However, Tierney could be left without a position as the station restructures its lineup.

WFAN’s January Lineup

Starting in January, WFAN’s programming will include:

  • Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti in the morning
  • The “Evan & Tiki” midday show
  • Craig Carton’s drive-time program

The “Boomer & Gio” show has become a staple of the station following Mike Francesa’s retirement in 2020.

Carton’s Career Journey

At 57 years old, Carton’s broadcasting journey has been marked by both success and controversy. He co-hosted with Boomer Esiason starting in 2007, after the dismissal of Don Imus over racist remarks. Their successful partnership lasted a decade before it was abruptly halted due to Carton’s arrest for fraud in 2017.

Convicted the following year, Carton served roughly one year of a three-and-a-half-year sentence. After his release, he was rehired by Oliviero to co-host the afternoon slot alongside Roberts. Two years prior, FS1 attempted to launch Carton on a national platform, but the ratings were disappointing, leading to his dismissal.

In conclusion, Carton’s return to WFAN seems to be a natural progression after his departure from FS1, with the station’s management favoring the current Roberts and Barber pairing. As Carton steps back into the spotlight, the upcoming lineup changes at WFAN promise an exciting new chapter for the station.
