Expert Highlights Ukraine’s Challenges in Zaporizhzhia Over Pokrovsk

Brigadier General (Ret’d) Alar Laneman has refuted Russia’s assertions regarding the capture of the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. He claims that the situation for Ukrainian forces is significantly graver in the Zaporizhzhia region. Laneman, also an independent MP at the Riigikogu, emphasized that Russia has aimed to seize Pokrovsk, a crucial transportation hub, since the summer of last year.

Current Situation in Pokrovsk

While discussing the conflict on “Ukraina stuudio,” Laneman stated that despite various reports of advancements in the Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad areas, intense firefights and precision strikes from Ukrainian forces continue. These operations are focused on dismantling the encroaching Russian forces.

  • Russia has been deploying heavy equipment in the region.
  • Reports suggest the involvement of the Pskov airborne division.
  • Encirclement claims by Russia contradict independent assessments.

Ukrainian Resistance and Strategy

Laneman noted that while Russia aims to sever supply routes for Ukrainian troops, resistance in Pokrovsk persists. He explained that past discussions about possible encirclements have been ongoing. The Ukrainian military reportedly views Pokrovsk as an opportunity to inflict casualties on Russian troops.

Challenges in the Zaporizhzhia Sector

Laneman pointed out that the situation is particularly dire for Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhzhia. Russian troops have sought to leverage poor weather for tactical advantages. Limited visibility hampers Ukraine’s ability to detect infiltrating enemy units.

Impact of Weather on Warfare

Bad weather conditions complicate the defense. This allows small Russian units to exploit gaps and advance. Laneman expressed concern that over time, the accumulation of Russian forces could neutralize Ukrainian positions.

  • Weather conditions lead to reduced visibility for Ukrainian defenders.
  • Single enemy soldiers may seize advantageous positions unnoticed.

The Strategic Importance of Staying in Pokrovsk

The discussion also touched on why Ukrainians are determined to hold Pokrovsk. Laneman noted that it is notoriously difficult to attack a city, where defenders generally have an advantage. He acknowledged the strategic risk involved in maintaining a stronghold in such a contested area.

Despite President Vladimir Putin claiming control over 70 percent of Pokrovsk, Kyiv strongly disputes this assertion. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s commander, confirmed that Ukrainian troops are actively pushing back against the assaults, with fighting ongoing in the city center.
