Freezing Rain and Icy Roads Prompt WNC Winter Weather Advisory

A storm system from the Gulf Coast is set to impact travel conditions in western North Carolina. Starting tonight and continuing into early Tuesday morning, this system will bring cold rain along with potential freezing rain, resulting in icy roads.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued for WNC

The National Weather Service has implemented a Winter Weather Advisory. This advisory is effective from 7 p.m. on Monday until 10 a.m. on Tuesday. It covers several counties, including:

  • Avery
  • Buncombe
  • Henderson
  • Mitchell
  • Yancey
  • Burke
  • McDowell
  • Polk
  • Rutherford Mountains

Travel Cautions Due to Icy Roads

Residents within the advisory area are urged to limit travel. Black ice poses a significant risk, and those who must drive should proceed with caution. Slowing down and allowing extra time for travel are strongly recommended.

Weather Forecast and Conditions

By midnight, icy conditions could extend to higher elevations, even outside the advisory zone. Temperatures will gradually rise overnight, with most areas expected to be above freezing by 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Ice accumulation is predicted to be minor, with areas in the northern mountains, such as Burnsville and Mt. Mitchell, potentially experiencing up to a tenth of an inch of ice.
