WFMZ Enhances Workflow with Upgraded Automation and Graphics

WFMZ-TV, an independent television station based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has recently upgraded its workflow with enhanced automation and graphics solutions. The station, operated by Maranatha Broadcasting Co., broadcasts over 10 hours of local news daily and runs multiple subchannels. To improve its operations and adapt to increasingly graphics-intensive sponsorships, WFMZ-TV implemented advanced technology from Imagine Communications.

Upgrade to Automation and Graphics Solutions

WFMZ-TV recognized the limitations of its previous automation setup. Managing playout and graphics was becoming inefficient across multiple facilities. To address these issues, the station adopted Imagine Communications’ ADC automation along with its Versio Graphics solutions.

Cohesive Workflow Across Multiple Sites

The automation system has been deployed across three locations: the main studios in Allentown, a disaster recovery site, and a dedicated disaster playout server at the MeTV transmitter site in Philadelphia. This move enabled WFMZ-TV to achieve a unified workflow that aligned seamlessly with their content creation process.

Benefits of the New System

Since implementing Imagine’s technology, WFMZ-TV has experienced immediate improvements. The platform automates the segmentation of syndicated shows, a process that previously required manual intervention. Instead of spending hours on segmenting, the system now utilizes BXF metadata to segment programs automatically, streamlining production.

  • Automated program segmentation has improved efficiency significantly.
  • Enhanced graphics tools allow for greater viewer engagement through diverse on-screen graphics.

For instance, during Hispanic Heritage Month, the station produced engaging educational graphics detailing aspects of Hispanic history and culture. The flexibility of the system enabled the content to remain fresh and interactive for viewers.

Dynamic Branding and Weather Channel Overhaul

WFMZ-TV also celebrated its “Berks Edition” newscast’s 30th anniversary with dynamic on-screen branding using Versio Graphics. This system automatically recognized when the anniversary newscast was live, switching to the special logo without manual reprogramming.

An overhaul of the weather channel also took place, replacing a cumbersome system with a new integrated graphics engine. This change has allowed for nearly 300 graphics to be generated efficiently from a single Adobe After Effects template, significantly reducing production time.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Innovation

The transition to Imagine’s solutions has been met with positive feedback from viewers. WFMZ-TV is now well-positioned for future growth, with plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary during Thanksgiving week in 2026. The combination of reliable automation and creative graphic capabilities will enable the station to continue delivering high-quality local content.

As WFMZ-TV anticipates its future, it remains committed to innovation and enhancing its services, backed by a proactive management team dedicated to expansion and excellence.
