Cardinals Release Xavier Thomas from Roster

On Friday, the Cardinals made a significant roster change by releasing Xavier Thomas from their outside linebacking unit. This move comes as Baron Browning returns from a concussion and BJ Ojulari rejoins the roster.

Cardinals Release Xavier Thomas

Xavier Thomas was a fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. He participated in four games this season but registered no defensive statistics. Last year, during his rookie season, he recorded 2.5 sacks over 14 games, along with one forced fumble and a pass defensed.

Impact of Roster Changes

The signing of Josh Sweat during free agency put added pressure on the linebacking position. Currently, Sweat leads the team with nine sacks, while Zaven Collins remains a key starter. The return of Ojulari, who was out for part of the season, also factored into Thomas’s release.

Jordan Burch, a third-round pick and former high school teammate of Thomas, is now expected to take a spot on the roster. Browning, who had been limited in practice while wearing a yellow non-contact jersey, returned to full practice on Friday.

Upcoming Game

The Cardinals are preparing for their upcoming matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. These roster adjustments reflect the team’s strategy to optimize their performance as the season continues.
