Tribute Book Celebrates Rocheservière Storyteller Étienne Remaud

The legacy of Étienne Remaud, an influential storyteller from Rocheservière, is receiving renewed attention through a tribute book. Initiated by several members of the local heritage association, this project aims to preserve Remaud’s captivating oral traditions and literary works.
Étienne Remaud: A Brief Biography
Étienne Remaud was born in 1913 in the village of Surière. He was a farmer until he had to retire at 49 due to health issues. Following his retirement, he transitioned to being a laborer.
Remaud was famous for blending reality with fantasy in his storytelling. He often included vibrant characters and local landmarks in his tales, which were reminiscent of traditional storytelling evenings.
Reviving Oral Traditions
Years after his retirement, Remaud began to document his stories. These included a rich collection of folklore that echoes the culture of Rocheservière. Many of his tales are compiled in the volumes titled “Les veillées de mon bocage,” where he shared stories about local legends and historical events.

Some of his writings were also featured in municipal newsletters, preserving his contributions to local history.
Publication of the Tribute Book
With the support of Remaud’s descendants, the Association du patrimoine cervièrois has compiled a comprehensive volume of his works. This tribute book includes 57 of Remaud’s stories, along with additional content from municipal bulletins and poems.
Illustrator Mathilde Leloup contributed her artistry to create an accessible publication for the public. A limited edition of 50 copies will be printed.

The tribute book will be available for purchase at local events, specifically:

- School La Source Christmas Market on December 6, 2025
The book will be sold for €25, with proceeds supporting the association’s efforts to promote the history and unique contributions of everyday individuals.
