Scottish Priest Abducted at Gunpoint in Cameroon

Father John Tatah, a priest who previously served in Lanarkshire, was kidnapped at gunpoint in Cameroon on November 15. He was taken while returning home from mass with his assistant. The perpetrators identified themselves as separatist fighters from a group known as “Ambazonia.”

Details of the Abduction

In a troubling development, four other priests and a layperson were also abducted after attempting to negotiate Father Tatah’s release. The kidnappers demanded a ransom for their freedom, refusing to let Father Tatah and the others go without payment.

Response from Church Officials

The Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea, has actively addressed this crisis. He expressed his disapproval of paying ransoms, stating in a letter to clergy that the church “never gives ransoms.” As a precaution, all priests within the area have been instructed to suspend activities and evacuate their parishes, schools, and other institutions.
