Orioles Sign Helsley to Two-Year Contract Agreement

The Baltimore Orioles have officially signed closer Ryan Helsley to a two-year contract agreement. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the first year, signaling a strategic enhancement of their pitching roster.

Impact of the Contract on Orioles’ Bullpen

This acquisition continues to bolster Baltimore’s pitching staff, which faced challenges in the previous season. The Orioles finished last in the American League East with a 75-87 record. In recent months, the team has already acquired right-hander Andrew Kittredge from the Chicago Cubs to address bullpen issues.

Ryan Helsley’s Career Performance

At 31, Helsley is one of the more sought-after relievers in the market. Over his seven-year career, he has maintained a 2.96 ERA across 319⅔ innings, accumulating impressive statistics:

  • Strikeouts: 377
  • Walks: 133
  • Saves: 105

Though he faced some struggles recently, including a 7.20 ERA during the final two months of the 2025 season, Helsley had a standout year in 2024. He led the National League with 49 saves and posted a standout 2.04 ERA with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Expectations for the Upcoming Season

The Orioles are optimistic that Helsley can regain his form. His fastball averages an impressive 99.3 mph, placing him in the 99th percentile of all pitchers. With anticipated injuries sidelining incumbent closer Felix Bautista for the entire 2026 season, Helsley is expected to take over closing duties.

Future Prospects for Orioles’ Rotation

Besides reinforcing the bullpen, Baltimore is also looking for additional starting-pitching options. The team previously traded Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Taylor Ward. They currently have Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish projected as the top starters.

As the offseason progresses, the Orioles may also consider acquiring another reliever, further solidifying their efforts to improve their pitching staff for the upcoming season.

The deal for Helsley is pending a physical exam; however, it signifies a crucial step for the Orioles as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing season.
