Chelsea: Strasbourg President Declares Independence from Being Feeder Club

Strasbourg’s president, Marc Keller, has announced the club’s intent to step away from its reputation as a feeder club for Chelsea. His remarks reflect the club’s evolution, particularly after partnering with BlueCo, Chelsea’s ownership group.
Strasbourg’s Growth and Ambition
Since being acquired for just one euro in 2012, Keller has overseen significant changes at Strasbourg. Under his leadership, the club has risen from the amateur fourth tier to competing in Ligue 1 within five years. This resurgence has set the stage for their current aspirations of becoming a consistent presence in European competitions.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The partnership with Chelsea has led to substantial investments in the club’s infrastructure. The Stade de la Meinau is undergoing a major expansion, increasing its seating capacity from 26,000 to 32,000. This redevelopment, estimated at £157 million, showcases a commitment to modernizing the club’s facilities.
- Stadium expansion from 26,000 to 32,000 seats
- £157 million redevelopment cost
- Focus on honoring past players with installed monuments
Strategic Partnerships and Player Development
The club’s new aspirations are reflected in its investment strategy. Keller emphasizes the importance of building a solid organization around the team. Key investments include enhancing staff, data analytics, physiotherapy, player care, and scouting networks.
The appointment of sporting director David Weir, previously of Brighton, is a significant step in further elevating the club’s competitive stance. Strasbourg’s squad has been notably transformed, with BlueCo investing £112 million to assemble the youngest squad in Europe’s top five leagues, averaging just 21.5 years old.
Player Movements and Future Prospects
Reflecting the collaborative relationship with Chelsea, players like Andrey Santos have benefited from loan arrangements between the clubs. Santos spent 18 months at Strasbourg and remains engaged with the team’s progress. Keller insists this collaboration is not merely about players going to Chelsea, but rather about nurturing talent within Strasbourg.
Strasbourg’s commitment to developing young players is evident, with Keller stating, “France is a good step for young players to develop.” He envisions that one player each year could reach Chelsea’s standards while also building a broader pool of talent for other European clubs.
Recent Player Sales
In line with their operational strategy, Strasbourg sold players worth £74 million during the summer transfer window. Notable transactions include:
- Dilane Bakwa to Nottingham Forest for approximately £30 million
- Former captain Habib Diarra to Sunderland, also for about £30 million
With a clear vision and ambitious plans, Keller underscores that Strasbourg’s future is built on more than just being a feeder club to Chelsea. The focus remains on ambition, tradition, and the development of a competitive squad. The club is set on making a mark in both domestic and European football while fostering a culture of growth and excellence.
