A man is seeking compensation from the city of Trois-Rivières after falling into a pit while riding an electric scooter. The incident occurred in August at Champlain Park, leading to significant injuries and requiring two months of hospitalization.
Accident Details
On August 23, David Leblanc-Sirois was riding his electric scooter when he unexpectedly hit a hole. This hole was approximately the size of a sewer opening and about four inches deep. Despite wearing a helmet, he suffered severe injuries including a double open fracture in his forearm and a wrist fracture.
Witness Account
A local woman, who visits Champlain Park frequently, witnessed the accident. She described the scene, saying, “His arm was hanging like a rag doll. It’s not complicated.” Shortly after the incident, the city covered the hole with a manhole cover.
Claim for Compensation
Leblanc-Sirois believes the city should have either secured or marked the pit to prevent accidents. After his recovery, he approached the city to file a complaint. He is now pursuing financial compensation for his injuries and the impact on his life.
City Regulations on Electric Scooters
The city of Trois-Rivières has stated that electric scooters are prohibited in parks, similar to other vehicles. Nonetheless, Leblanc-Sirois argues that there should have been clear signage at the park’s entrance to communicate this restriction. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I am exasperated.” He hopes to reopen discussions with the city regarding compensation; otherwise, he may consider legal action.
