Mercy Ships’ Cargo Day Targets Historic Record Haul

Mercy Ships’ annual Cargo Day is poised to achieve a historic fundraising milestone. Organizers are optimistic that contributions from the maritime industry will exceed last year’s total of $2.2 million. Already, the 2025 campaign has raised over $1.6 million since its launch on November 5, aiming for a target of $2.5 million by year-end.
Cargo Day’s Impact on Maritime Community
Initiated in 2016, Cargo Day has become an essential charitable initiative within the shipping sector. It channels various forms of support, including:
- Freight commissions
- Fixture revenues
- Direct contributions
These funds are crucial for the operation of Mercy Ships’ hospital vessels, such as the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy, which is recognized as the largest non-governmental hospital ship worldwide. To date, over 150 companies have participated, raising approximately $15 million.
Celebrating a Decade of Service
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Cargo Day, which holds special significance. The initiative was originally conceived by the late Tim Webb of BRS. He encouraged tanker charterers to contribute “Mercy Cargoes.” By urging brokers to donate 50% of their commission and facilitating matching contributions from charterers, Cargo Day was born.
Initially focused on the tanker market, the initiative has broadened to include a range of participants, such as:
- Dry bulk operators
- Shipowners and builders
- Terminals and agents
- Suppliers and service providers
Many of these companies now host their own fundraising events or commit fixed donations, amplifying the initiative’s reach and impact.
Supporting Life-Saving Surgeries and Training
The funds raised during Cargo Day significantly benefit Mercy Ships’ medical missions. They help provide thousands of free surgeries annually, including:
- Cataract procedures
- Cleft lip surgeries
- Complex orthopaedic and maxillofacial operations
Additionally, these contributions support Mercy Ships’ medical training programs. These programs empower hundreds of African healthcare professionals, enhancing their skills and contributing to long-term healthcare capacity building across the continent.
Recognition for Participants
Companies that participate in Cargo Day receive acknowledgment through El-Balad’s official website, which highlights industry support. This recognition not only celebrates their contributions but also encourages further participation in charitable efforts within the maritime community.
