Global Vision Science Partnership Extended Through 2030

The InnoHK Centre for Eye and Vision Research (CEVR), located in Hong Kong, has received a funding extension through 2030. This center represents a collaboration between the University of Waterloo and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. CEVR aims to advance technologies that prevent, detect, and treat vision loss, as well as enhance overall eye health.

Launched in 2021, CEVR initially operated under a five-year funding commitment from the Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong. The partnership is intended to foster world-class vision science research while translating innovations into practical health solutions.

Leadership and Vision

The center is led by Dr. Ben Thompson, who serves as CEO and scientific director. He is a professor at Waterloo’s Faculty of Science and the director of its School of Optometry and Vision Science. Prof. Allen Cheong, also a key figure, is the COO and deputy scientific director. He is the associate head of PolyU’s School of Optometry.

Achievements and Innovations

Dr. Thompson expressed enthusiasm about the funding extension, noting that the center has successfully advanced its projects and secured early customers. The new funding will help CEVR’s technologies mature and integrate into clinical practices and patients’ homes.

CEVR has narrowed its focus from 25 initial projects to 16 with significant health impacts and market potential. Key projects include:

  • Eye on a Chip: A preclinical testing platform replicating the eye’s cellular environment.
  • Augmented Reality Software: Assisting individuals with vision impairment to navigate independently.
  • Anti-Myopia Screens: Safer screen time solutions for children’s developing vision.
  • Biomimetic Drug Delivery: Targeted drug delivery to the retina using natural immune cell materials.

Future Goals

CEVR is committed to innovating solutions that enhance eye health, particularly for an aging population. The leaders believe that the center will eventually become self-sustaining, driven by the growing need for their technologies. Through international collaboration, CEVR aims to unlock new insights and propel innovation in vision science.
