MP Seeks Compensation for 18-Month Delay in Roundabout Project

A significant delay and budget overruns have emerged in the Grovehurst roundabout upgrade project. Originally scheduled for completion in June 2022, the project is now 18 months behind schedule and exceeds its budget by £280,000.

Project Overview

The Grovehurst roundabout is located off the A249 between Kemsley and Iwade, near Sittingbourne. The upgrade aims to transform the old dumbbell junction into a two-bridge system. Kent County Council (KCC) oversees the project, which involves contractor Jackson Civil Engineering.

Budget and Delays

  • Original completion date: June 2022
  • Current completion estimate: New Year 2024
  • Current budget overrun: £280,000
  • Total projected cost for Grovehurst and Key Street roundabouts: £38.1 million

Despite initial plans, the project has faced repeated delays. KCC has had to notify the public three times regarding the timeline changes.

Calls for Compensation

MP Kevin McKenna, representing Sittingbourne and Sheppey, is urging KCC to seek financial compensation from the contractors. In a letter to Cllr Peter Osbourne, KCC’s cabinet member for transport and highways, McKenna emphasized the need for accountability.

Community Impact

Local residents and businesses have expressed their frustration over the ongoing disruptions. Bus operators have had to increase services to manage traffic congestion caused by project-related closures. Aerial footage taken on November 13 showed significant traffic delays, with queues stretching back three miles.

Focus on Local Infrastructure

McKenna insists that any funds recovered from the contractors should be reinvested into the local community. He stated, “The community deserves accountability, transparency, and proactive measures following these relentless delays.” Residents are hopeful that KCC will take decisive action to alleviate the ongoing chaos.

Controversy in Leadership

In related news, Cllr Osbourne faces criticism for a controversial message sent via WhatsApp regarding a colleague. This incident has further fueled dissatisfaction among the public concerning council leadership during the project.

As the Grovehurst roundabout project continues, the community looks for clarity on compensation and the effective use of any funds recovered to improve local infrastructure.
