San Diego Zoo’s Beloved Gramma the Tortoise Passes Away at 141

Gramma, the beloved Galapagos tortoise of the San Diego Zoo, has passed away at the age of 141. Born in the Galapagos Islands, she was a remarkable creature known for her gentle demeanor and remarkable lifespan.

Gramma’s Legacy and Journey

Gramma was estimated to be around 141 years old at the time of her passing on November 20. While the exact date of her arrival at the San Diego Zoo is not documented, she transitioned from the Bronx Zoo in either 1928 or 1931. During her long life, she witnessed world-changing events, including two World Wars and the tenure of 20 U.S. presidents.

Zoo staff affectionately referred to her as “the Queen of the Zoo.” Despite suffering from age-related bone conditions, her sweet nature continued to captivate zoo visitors until the end. Gramma had a significant impact on many who visited the zoo over the decades, with numerous attendees sharing fond memories of their childhood encounters with her.

Visitor Recollections

  • Cristina Park, 69, shared her memories of visiting the zoo as a child.
  • Park’s experience inspired her to adopt a pet tortoise and engage in tortoise conservation efforts.
  • Many social media users expressed nostalgia for their visits to Gramma over the years.

The Galapagos Tortoise Species

Galapagos tortoises are known for their impressive lifespans, often exceeding 100 years in the wild and potentially reaching up to double that in captivity. The species includes 15 subspecies, of which three have gone extinct. The remaining subspecies are either vulnerable or critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Efforts to support the conservation of Galapagos tortoises have been ongoing. Since 1965, more than 10,000 juvenile tortoises have been bred in captivity and released into the wild by the Galapagos Conservancy. Recent successes in breeding include a notable event in April when four baby Galapagos tortoises were born at the Philadelphia Zoo, born to parents around 100 years old. Additionally, in June, a 135-year-old tortoise named Goliath at Zoo Miami became a father for the first time.

Gramma’s passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to inspire conservation and appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
