Winter Curtails Construction Projects and Travel Activities

Winter weather significantly influences construction activities and travel conditions across Indiana. Snow, rain, and low temperatures create challenges that affect the pace and types of projects undertaken during this season.

Impact of Winter on Construction Projects

While some construction continues, winter limits the scope of work. Jordan Yaney from the Indiana Department of Transportation emphasized that winter brings unavoidable restrictions, leading to careful planning by construction crews. Summer remains the primary season for extensive projects.

“We aim to complete as much work as possible before winter,” Yaney noted. However, some projects span multiple seasons, allowing certain activities to persist.

Types of Work Affected

  • Hot asphalt is crucial for permanent paving and striping projects.
  • Cold asphalt can temporarily manage issues like potholes but lacks durability.
  • Traffic control and transitioning to new pavement are prioritized before severe winter weather.

Adam Pinsker, with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, explained the limitations of winter construction. “You cannot produce hot asphalt in cold conditions,” he remarked. This restriction impacts long-term project capabilities.

Traffic and Travel during Winter

With fewer lane closures expected, the winter season presents an easier travel experience for Hoosiers. For example, an influx of travelers was notable during the recent Thanksgiving holiday. Yaney confirmed plans to minimize construction interruptions during peak travel times.

Jay Reeve, a motorist traveling from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Columbus, Ohio, shared his experience. He took a detour to avoid construction delays but encountered only a minor inconvenience. “Eleven minutes is manageable,” he stated.

Looking Ahead

As construction crews adapt to winter limitations, Indiana residents benefit from fewer disruptions on the roads. The state’s strategy focuses on reopening as many projects as feasible during heavy travel periods. This approach ensures smoother travel for those navigating Indiana’s winter weather.
