Royal Navy Intercepts Russian Ships in English Channel

In a significant maritime incident, the Royal Navy intercepted two Russian vessels in the English Channel. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that this operation involved the HMS Severn, which encountered the RFN Stoikiy corvette and the Yelnya tanker as they navigated the Dover Strait.
Recent Russian Naval Activities
This interception marks a continuation of Russian naval movements in waters surrounding the UK. Just last week, a Russian spy ship, the Yantar, was observed near Scotland. Reports indicated that Yantar employed lasers to disrupt the operations of RAF pilots monitoring its activities.
Defence Secretary’s Statement
Defence Secretary John Healey described the actions of the Yantar as “deeply dangerous.” He cautioned Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “We see you. We know what you’re doing. We are ready.” Healey indicated there has been a 30% rise in the number of Russian vessels operating in UK waters over the past two years.
Details of the Interception
Following the interception of the Stoikiy and Yelnya, the HMS Severn transitioned monitoring responsibilities to a NATO ally off the coast of Brittany, France. The British vessel continued to observe the situation from a safe distance, prepared to respond to any unexpected developments.
Pursuits of Previous Incidents
- This is not the first encounter with the Stoikiy. In May, two Royal Navy vessels, along with the 814 Naval Air Squadron, trailed the corvette.
- The Stoikiy was then en route to meet two merchant ships returning from the Mediterranean.
- These vessels were later monitored by HMS Hurworth as they returned to the Baltic Sea.
Implications of Increased Activity
Healey noted the increased presence of Russian vessels as indicative of escalating aggression, which poses a threat not only to the UK but also to broader European stability. Consequently, he announced modifications to the Royal Navy’s rules of engagement to allow closer surveillance of the Yantar when operating in UK waters.
About HMS Severn
Commissioned in 2002, HMS Severn is a River-class offshore patrol vessel. The Royal Navy states that vessels of this class are crucial for various operations, including:
- Escorting foreign warships
- Inspecting fishing vessels
- Defending UK territorial waters
The Royal Navy remains vigilant in monitoring any further Russian activities in the region, underscoring its commitment to national security.
