12-Inch Snowfall Prompts Winter Storm Alert

A series of winter storms is set to impact the northern United States this week. Heavy snowfall and strong winds will create hazardous travel conditions as millions prepare for Thanksgiving travel.
Winter Storm Alerts Issued
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm watches across several states, including:
- Minnesota
- North Dakota
- Wisconsin
- Michigan
- New York
Impacts and Forecasts
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, forecasts indicate that areas could receive over 12 inches of snow between Tuesday and Thursday. Wind gusts may reach up to 45 mph, causing travel to become “very difficult to impossible.”
Similarly, northern Wisconsin could see 6 to 12 inches of heavy lake-effect snow along the Lake Superior shoreline, along with wind gusts hitting 35 mph. The counties of Ashland and Iron are particularly at risk, with Iron County potentially exceeding 12 inches of snow from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Conditions Across the Region
Travel across northern and central Minnesota may face significant disruption as snowfall in some areas could reach 9 inches. In North Dakota, regions to the north and south are expected to see at least 4 inches of snow, accompanied by strong winds between Monday and Tuesday.
Western and upstate New York will also experience lake-effect snow, with accumulations potentially exceeding 7 inches from Wednesday through Friday. Strong winds and the possibility of whiteout conditions could make travel perilous.
Recommendations for Travelers
Authorities advise travelers to monitor weather updates closely and, if possible, delay travel plans. If travel is necessary, extreme caution is recommended due to the slick and hazardous conditions anticipated on roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Official Statements
The NWS explains that winter storm watches are issued when conditions indicate a significant winter storm may occur, including heavy snowfall, sleet, and ice storms. As AccuWeather meteorologist Reneé Duff noted, those traveling on Thanksgiving Day in the Great Lakes region should expect lake-effect snow showers, which can significantly reduce visibility and create slippery roads.
Travelers are urged to stay informed and to plan their journeys with potential weather disruptions in mind.
