Calgary Families Voice Concerns About Care Home Treatment

Two families from the Calgary area are expressing significant concerns about the treatment of their mothers in local care facilities. They are calling for greater accountability for health-care aides in these settings.
Serious Concerns Raised by Families
Barb and Terry Davies, daughters of Edna Davies, observed alarming signs of neglect, including severe bruises and skin tears. Prompted by these observations, they launched an investigation under the Protection for Persons in Care Act.
This investigation revealed serious deficiencies in the care provided by AgeCare McKenzie Towne. The “Fall Risk Assessment” for their mother was found to be “insufficient, inaccurate, and conflicting with the care plan.” Additionally, there was evidence indicating serious bodily harm.
Issues at Airdrie Community Care
Similarly, Kelly Geransky, son of resident Helen Geransky, noted drastic changes in his mother’s behavior. After unsuccessful attempts to address concerns directly with Airdrie Community Care staff, he and his sister decided to install cameras in her care home room. The footage captured incidents that they believe demonstrate inadequate care by health-care aides.
The management at Airdrie Community Care has since changed and the new operators claim to have reviewed and acted upon the family’s concerns.
Upcoming Changes in Health-Care Aid Regulations
In a significant development for the industry, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta will expand its oversight in February 2026. This will include requiring health-care aides to register with the college, regardless of whether they are employed in private or publicly-funded facilities.
