New Program Hires Former Baylor Coach Art Briles

Baylor University’s football program announced that head coach Dave Aranda will remain with the team through 2026. This decision comes amid speculation regarding his future due to a disappointing season, as the Bears currently hold a record of 5-6. Aranda has an overall record of 36-36 in his six seasons at Baylor.
The recent changes within the athletic department may have influenced this decision. Athletic director Mack Rhoades stepped down for personal reasons while the program investigates unreported allegations against him.
Despite the extension, Aranda’s position may still be precarious. He has not been able to replicate the successes of former Baylor coaches Art Briles and Matt Rhule. Briles, who had a successful tenure with the Bears, was dismissed in 2016 for reasons unrelated to the team’s on-field performance.
Art Briles Returns to Coaching
In a notable development, Art Briles has signed a contract to return to college football. Eastern New Mexico has hired him as head coach for three years. This contract includes a significant buyout clause exceeding $1 million if he chooses to leave the institution.
Reports by Brett McMurphy of On3 revealed that Briles is excited about this new opportunity. Briles previously coached the Guelfi Firenze in the Italian Football League, where he achieved success by leading the team to a championship in 2022. Additionally, he has experience coaching at the high school level and a previous stint at the University of Houston.
Briles’ Coaching Career Overview
- Coaching Record at Baylor: 65-37 (2008-2015)
- Conference Championships: Back-to-back Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014
- Individual Honors: AP College Football Coach of the Year in 2013
- Previous Record at Houston: 34-28 (2003-2007)
As the college football landscape evolves, the implications of these coaching changes at Baylor and Eastern New Mexico will be closely monitored as the programs aim for future success.
