Raiders Dismiss Offensive Coordinator Kelly, Sources Report

The Las Vegas Raiders have officially dismissed offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after just 11 games into his first season. This decision follows a disappointing 24-10 defeat against the Cleveland Browns, which left the Raiders with a 2-9 record for the season.

Reason for Dismissal

This significant change comes amid a troubling trend for the Raiders’ offensive performance. Under Kelly’s guidance, the team has struggled significantly, ranking last in the NFL in points per game, averaging only 15.0. Additionally, they hold the 30th position in total yards per game (268.9), 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5), and 30th in offensive expected points added (EPA) with a dismal score of minus-77.8. Their red zone efficiency is also a concern, sitting at 28th with just 48.1%.

Coach’s Statement

First-year head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Kelly’s exit in a statement, expressing gratitude for his service. Carroll emphasized the need to improve, acknowledging that winning is essential in the league.

Kelly’s Performance and Team Challenges

Chip Kelly, who previously helped Ohio State secure a national title, was brought in to revamp a struggling offense. However, the strategy failed. Quarterback Geno Smith has suffered under Kelly’s leadership, demonstrating one of the worst seasons for a starting quarterback. He has thrown for 2,367 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, with a completion rate of 66.6%. His passer rating ranks 29th in the league at 82.4, and he sits at 32nd in QBR with just 29.2.

The offensive woes are compounded by injuries to key players. All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers missed three games due to a knee injury, while left tackle Kolton Miller was placed on injured reserve on September 30 due to a high ankle sprain. Right guard Jackson Powers-Johnson is also on IR with an ankle injury.
