FIA Secures Manhole Cover Before Vegas Qualifying

The recent Las Vegas Grand Prix has been marred by safety concerns stemming from a loose manhole cover. This issue has led the FIA to take immediate action before the qualifying rounds.
FIA Takes Action on Manhole Cover
During the second practice session on Thursday, a marshal reported movement from a manhole cover located near Turn 17. This prompted race control to introduce a red flag to assess the situation. Shortly after, practice was temporarily halted again due to further movement of the cover.
The FIA responded swiftly by closing the session as a preventative measure. Following overnight inspections, officials found a critical fault with the manhole cover’s closure mechanism, which necessitated additional safety measures.
Welding and Inspections Conducted
To address the potential risks, the manhole cover was welded shut. This action was part of a larger plan, which included the welding of 14 other manhole assemblies situated around the circuit. An FIA statement confirmed these findings and the actions taken.
- The problematic manhole cover was disassembled and inspected.
- A specific issue with the closure mechanism was identified.
- Welding was applied to ensure stability and safety.
- All manhole covers near the racing line were reinspected.
Comparison to Past Incidents
This incident draws parallels to a similar event during the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix two years ago. A valve cover issue resulted in damage to Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, affecting the first practice session and causing delays.
Loose manhole covers have been a recurring issue at street circuits, typically caused by the extreme forces exerted by the high-speed F1 cars. The unique design of these vehicles creates low pressure, effectively sucking them down onto the track.
Looking Ahead to Qualifying
With the issues resolved, the final practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. local time, followed by qualifying at 8 p.m. This proactive approach by the FIA emphasizes their commitment to safety in the sport, ensuring a secure environment for drivers and teams.
