LSU Moves to Dismiss Kelly Amid Lawsuit Allegations

In a significant turn of events, LSU’s board of supervisors has taken steps towards terminating Brian Kelly, the team’s former football coach. This decision comes in light of a lawsuit filed by Kelly against the university on November 10, 2025.

Termination Notice Approved

During a recent meeting, LSU board members authorized President Wade Rousse to formally notify Kelly of his termination. The discussion took place during a closed executive session, and no objections were raised to this decision.

Lawsuit Claims

  • Kelly alleges he was informed of a termination “with cause,” which would allow LSU to avoid a substantial buyout.
  • The lawsuit, filed in the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge, seeks confirmation that Kelly was terminated without cause, thus entitled to his full buyout of $54 million.
  • It also contends that former athletic director Scott Woodward lacked the authority to terminate Kelly.

The legal documents assert that LSU has never indicated that Kelly’s dismissal was justified and instead affirmed that the decision stemmed from the team’s performance issues.

Previous Buyout Offers

In light of the ongoing disputes, Kelly declined earlier settlement offers from LSU, which were reportedly $25 million and $30 million. This ongoing situation raises questions about the university’s hiring strategies and financial commitments.

Political Criticism and Leadership Changes

On October 29, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry publicly criticized Woodward for the contract negotiated with Kelly, expressing concerns over financial liabilities associated with the hire. Following this critique, Woodward resigned, and Verge Ausberry, an experienced LSU administrator, was appointed as his successor.

As LSU seeks to move forward, rumors indicate that Lane Kiffin, currently the head coach at Ole Miss and also a target for Florida, is a top candidate to replace Kelly. Kiffin is expected to discuss his future with Ole Miss administrators soon.

This development marks a pivotal moment for LSU as it navigates the complexities of college football contracts and leadership transitions.
