Duquesne Coach Reflects on Akron Roots Before Game at LeBron’s High School

Duquesne head coach Dru Joyce III recently reflected on his deep roots in Akron, Ohio, while preparing for an upcoming game. The matchup will be against Northeastern on LeBron James Court at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, where Joyce played alongside NBA superstar LeBron James. The game, which holds significant sentimental value for Joyce, is set for Saturday and is free for attendees.
Celebrating a Legendary Team Legacy
More than 20 years ago, Joyce and James led their high school team to a state championship in Ohio. This Saturday’s game marks Joyce’s second consecutive appearance at his alma mater, amplifying the emotional connection he feels to the venue. “This one is close to the heart,” Joyce stated. “It is special. I’m back home, amongst my family and friends,” he added.
A Unique Experience for the Team
In preparation for the game, Joyce introduced his players to the I Promise School, an initiative by the LeBron James Family Foundation. They also visited the LeBron James Museum and House Three Thirty, enhancing their understanding of the local community and its ties to the NBA star.

During their visit, Gloria James, LeBron’s mother, interacted with Joyce and his players, adding to the thrill of the experience. They were excited to learn that she and LeBron had watched Duquesne’s recent game against Villanova, elevating team morale significantly.
Maintaining Strong Bonds
Joyce expressed that his relationship with LeBron transcends basketball, built on loyalty and mutual respect. While the NBA superstar is unlikely to attend due to the Lakers’ road game against the Utah Jazz on Sunday, Joyce remains hopeful for a surprise appearance. He noted that family and friends, including some of his former teammates, are expected to support him during this momentous occasion.
“I don’t know who walks through that door on Saturday,” Joyce said, hinting at the excitement of the day. The matchup promises to honor the legacy of a high school team that not only shaped Joyce’s career but also spotlighted the impactful journey of LeBron James as one of basketball’s all-time greats.
