Grizzly Attack Injures Several Schoolchildren in British Columbia

A tragic incident unfolded in British Columbia as a grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers. The event took place on a hiking trail in Bella Coola on Thursday afternoon, resulting in injuries to at least 11 individuals. Among the injured, two are reported to be in critical condition.
Details of the Grizzly Attack
The attack occurred approximately 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver. A class of fourth and fifth graders was hiking when the bear charged. Several teachers attempted to fend off the animal using bear spray and noise-making devices, according to reports from Global News.
Response and Impact
Emergency Health Services in British Columbia indicated that seven of the injured were treated on-site and did not require hospitalization. The bear remains at large following the assault.
Community Reaction
The Nuxalk Nation council has urged local residents to steer clear of the attack site. Chief Samuel Schooner expressed the community’s distress in a social media post, highlighting the compassion shown by those who offered immediate assistance. He remarked, “We are all deeply affected by the bear attack that has impacted our children and many loved ones.” He encouraged kindness during this difficult time, stating, “A simple hug can make all the difference.”
School Closure and Support
Acwsalcta Elementary School, attended by the injured children, was closed on Friday. The school board praised the students for their solidarity and adherence to instructions during the emergency.
Previous Grizzly Attack
This incident comes less than a month after another tragic grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, where a 63-year-old man named Joe Pendry was killed. Pendry encountered a grizzly bear while attempting to approach her cubs near Cranbrook on October 2. Despite reportedly fighting back, he succumbed to his injuries weeks later.
Authorities stress that bear encounters typically increase in October as grizzlies seek out food before hibernation. This raises concerns about interactions between bears and humans in local communities.
The community is now left to seek healing and support in the wake of these alarming events.
