Grizzly Bear Attacks Canadian School Group, Injures 11 in Escape

A grizzly bear has attacked a school group in Bella Coola, British Columbia, injuring eleven individuals, two of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred on a walking trail on Thursday afternoon, prompting local authorities to caution residents to stay indoors while efforts to capture the bear are underway.

Details of the Incident

The unfortunate event involved students from Acwsalcta School, which is operated by the indigenous Nuxalk Nation. The school is located approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) northwest of Vancouver.

Injuries and Medical Response

  • Two individuals are reported in critical condition.
  • Two more sustained serious injuries.
  • Seven others received treatment on-site.

The British Columbia Health Services Authority confirmed that four injured individuals remained hospitalized as of Friday afternoon. Many patients required airlifting to the nearest hospital, necessitating transportation to a nearby airport.

Witness Accounts

Veronica Schooner, a parent of one of the students, shared insights about the encounter. She mentioned that a male teacher bore the brunt of the attack while attempting to protect the children. Some children were also affected by bear spray used in an effort to deter the animal. Schooner’s ten-year-old son was among the group but did not suffer any injuries. He described seeing the bear running close by and even felt its fur as it chased another individual.

Community Response

In light of the attack, the Nuxalk Nation has temporarily closed the school and extended counseling services to students and staff. They have taken to social media to advise residents to remain indoors and avoid highways while officers, armed to ensure safety, continue their search for the bear.

“It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time,” a representative from the Nation expressed. “We are so grateful for our team and our students.”
