Scheifele Becomes Jets’ All-Time Leader in Games Played: ‘I Feel Old’

Mark Scheifele has made history by becoming the all-time leader in games played for the Winnipeg Jets franchise. This significant milestone occurred during a recent game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he suited up for his 898th game. Scheifele’s journey with the Jets began when he was picked seventh overall by general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Scheifele’s Record-Breaking Career
Having played all 898 of his games with the Jets, Scheifele surpassed former captain Blake Wheeler, who played a total of 873 games with the team. While Wheeler contributed to the franchise during its Atlanta Thrashers era, Scheifele has been a consistent presence since his debut, marking 13 seasons in the NHL.
Contract and Future with the Jets
In 2023, Scheifele signed a seven-year contract worth $59.5 million, ensuring his stay in Winnipeg until the end of the 2030-31 season. He expressed surprise at reaching this milestone, saying, “I didn’t even know” until a video tribute was shown during the game. As he approaches his 900th game, Scheifele reflects on his long tenure with the franchise, feeling a mix of pride and nostalgia.
Performance on the Ice
In the same game where he reached this milestone, Scheifele collected three assists, contributing significantly to the Jets’ 5-2 victory over the Blue Jackets. He assisted on goals from teammates Josh Morrissey, Kyle Connor, and Logan Stanley, showcasing his continued leadership and skill.
- Games Played: 898
- Goals: 347
- Assists: 484
- Total Points: 831
- Post-Season Points: 49 in 53 games
Team Recognition
His linemate, Kyle Connor, praised Scheifele’s dedication to the organization, saying he “bleeds Winnipeg Jet hockey.” Coach Scott Arniel also highlighted the significance of reaching 900 games, recognizing Scheifele’s status as a top player in the NHL.
Shifting Focus in the League
On the opposing side, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski also celebrated a personal achievement by reaching 400 career points. This accomplishment makes him the first defenseman in Blue Jackets history to achieve this milestone, trailing only two forwards in franchise scoring.
As both teams look ahead, Scheifele’s leadership and achievements continue to inspire fans and players alike in Winnipeg, reinforcing his valuable role in the franchise’s history.
