Philo Mentored Me; I Did the Same for Professor Brian Cox

Darren Wharton, the former keyboardist of Thin Lizzy, recently shared his experiences of life on tour with rock legend Phil Lynott. He is preparing for a tribute concert on January 4 at Dublin’s 3Arena, marking the 40th anniversary of Lynott’s passing.
Wharton Reflects on His Musical Journey
Wharton joined Thin Lizzy at the young age of 18, following Phil Lynott’s invitation. This opportunity set him on a remarkable path in the music industry. He later formed the band Dare, where he brought in a young Brian Cox as a keyboardist.
“Phil took me under his wing,” Wharton recalled, highlighting the mentorship he received from Lynott. He reminisced about the day Brian Cox’s father approached him to introduce his son, emphasizing their immediate rapport.
A Unique Partnership with Brian Cox
In the mid-1980s, Brian Cox temporarily deferred university to tour with Wharton. Their shared experiences fostered discussions about science, showcasing a blend of rock ‘n’ roll and intellectual curiosity during their travels.
Cox later reflected on his time with Dare during his appearance on Desert Island Discs, expressing his astonishment at the transition from academic life to performing in stadiums. Wharton humorously addressed Cox’s lighthearted claim about using “chip fat” on stage, clarifying that he preferred suntan oil to enhance his appearance under the lights.
Musical Legacy and Tribute to Lynott
Wharton has composed songs to honor Lynott, including “King Of Spades,” written shortly after Lynott’s death. This track has become a fan favorite over the past four decades. It was inspired by the iconic imagery from Thin Lizzy’s album “Fighting.”
Performing at the 3Arena
The upcoming tribute concert will feature an impressive lineup including Eric Bell, Ricky Warwick, and more, alongside the RTE Concert Orchestra and the National Children’s Choir. Wharton expressed hope that this event would afford him the chance to perform the famed piano solo from “Old Town,” a song synonymous with Lynott.
This concert is not just a recollection of the past but a celebration of the musical bond between Wharton and Lynott, showcasing the enduring impact of both musicians on the rock scene.
