Giants RB Cam Skattebo’s Season Threatened by Injury: Latest Update

The New York Giants faced a significant blow this season with the loss of rookie running back Cam Skattebo due to a severe ankle injury. During the second quarter of their Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, Skattebo sustained an open ankle dislocation, a fractured fibula, and a ruptured deltoid ligament. The injury occurred while attempting to catch a pass, causing his right leg to become trapped, resulting in a gruesome scene.

Immediate medical attention was provided, and Skattebo was placed in an air cast before being taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery. The prognosis from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport indicates that Skattebo is expected to miss the remainder of the current season as he undergoes recovery.

Injury Details and Recovery Timeline

Skattebo’s injury necessitated significant medical intervention, and while severe, the outlook for his recovery is positive. Rapoport suggested that the rookie might be sidelined for approximately 4-6 months. This timeline provides hope for his return by the 2026 NFL offseason program.

With 405 rushing yards and five touchdowns over 101 carries, along with 24 catches for 207 yards and two additional touchdowns, Skattebo was a key contributor to the Giants’ offensive strategies.

Replacement in the Depth Chart

In light of Skattebo’s injury, the Giants have adjusted their running back roster. Currently, the team features three healthy running backs:

  • Tyrone Tracy Jr.
  • Devon Singletary
  • Dante Miller (Practice Squad)

Tracy and Singletary have shared responsibilities since Skattebo’s exit, with Tracy starting the past two games. Their performance has been relatively even, with Tracy posting 108 yards on 23 touches, while Singletary has accumulated 124 yards on 21 touches. With the team entering Week 11, interim coach Mike Kafka will need to make strategic decisions regarding the running back rotation, especially with the starting quarterback Jaxson Dart also unavailable due to injury.

Outlook for the Giants

As the Giants navigate this challenging period, the absence of Cam Skattebo will undoubtedly be felt. However, the team remains optimistic about a successful recovery for their promising rookie and looks forward to integrating him back into the lineup for the upcoming season.
