Revised Driving Test Rules Tackle Bot Booking Issue

Significant changes are set to be implemented in the driving test booking system to address ongoing issues with bot bookings. These revised driving test rules aim to streamline the process and ensure fairness for all learner drivers.
New Changes in Test Booking System
Currently, driving instructors can book tests on behalf of their students, but this practice will be prohibited. Additionally, new restrictions will be introduced regarding how many times a driver can reschedule or swap their test. Learners will also face limitations on the geographical area where they can change their booked tests.
Challenges Faced by Learner Drivers
Amelia Lightfoot, a 20-year-old learner from Devon, experienced firsthand the difficulties in securing a driving test. It took her over a month of daily attempts on the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website to finally book a slot. Unfortunately, the only date she found was six months away. She expressed frustration after failing her initial test and emphasized the importance of obtaining her license. “Living in a rural area with limited public transport makes a driving license crucial for improving my quality of life,” Lightfoot said.
Efforts to Reduce Backlog
To combat the delay in driving test appointments, the DVSA is enlisting the support of 36 examiners from the Ministry of Defence. These examiners are civil servants, aiming to alleviate the growing backlog of driving tests.
- The DVSA has hired 316 new examiners, resulting in a net gain of only 40 due to departures.
- Starting next year, driving examiners will receive a retention payment of £5,000 to encourage them to remain in their roles.
Concerns from Lawmakers
Ruth Cadbury MP, chair of the Transport Committee, criticized the slow progress in updating the existing test booking system. She noted that the summer 2026 target for these changes is unlikely to be met. “We will continue to seek regular updates from the Department for Transport on this matter,” Cadbury remarked.
These revisions are crucial for fostering a more efficient and fair driving test experience for all applicants. Improved regulations and enhanced support for examiners are vital to address the current challenges in the system.
