Damon Albarn Reflects on Missed Chance to Record with Bowie and Davies

Damon Albarn, the co-founder of Gorillaz, recently reflected on notable missed collaborations during an interview on Radio X. Alongside artist Jamie Hewlett, Albarn reviewed his artistic journey and highlighted significant opportunities that fell through.

Damon Albarn’s Reflections on Collaborating with David Bowie

One of the most prominent figures Albarn wished to collaborate with was the late David Bowie. He revealed that he nearly recorded with Bowie in the late 1990s. In a conversation with Radio X presenter Dan O’Connell, Albarn expressed his regret about this missed opportunity.

  • Year: Late 1990s
  • Artists: Damon Albarn, David Bowie, Ray Davies

Albarn recounted a pivotal moment when Bowie invited him backstage while touring in Switzerland. He recalled that the two were on the verge of creating music together when Bowie’s tour success led to a change in plans. Albarn lamented, “I regret that one. I just imagine what that might have sounded like.”

Shared Stage Experience

Despite not recording together, Albarn and Bowie did perform together on a French television program in 2003. Their duet on “Fashion” displayed the chemistry between the two iconic artists, albeit under unexpected circumstances.

Another Missed Collaboration: Dionne Warwick

Another noteworthy collaboration that did not materialize involved soul legend Dionne Warwick. She was close to featuring on Gorillaz’s acclaimed album, “Demon Days,” released in 2005.

  • Album: Demon Days
  • Artist: Dionne Warwick

Hewlett reminisced about a studio session where Warwick questioned the album’s title. Albarn mentioned that Warwick found some lyrics and themes difficult to embrace, leading to her eventual withdrawal from the project. Nonetheless, he praised her talent and contributions to music.

Upcoming Gorillaz Album: The Mountain

Looking to the future, Gorillaz is set to release a new album titled “The Mountain,” now scheduled for March 2026. The album is anticipated to feature posthumous contributions from several past collaborators. Notable names include:

  • Dennis Hopper
  • Tony Allen
  • Mark E Smith
  • Bobby Womack
  • Dave Jolicoeur (De La Soul)

In addition to these legends, the album will include works from Johnny Marr, Sparks, and Asha Bhosle, the celebrated 92-year-old Indian music icon.

As Albarn reflects on missed opportunities, fans eagerly await the new directions Gorillaz will take with “The Mountain,” promising a blend of nostalgia and innovation.
