Idaho Families Seek Reimbursement from Bryan Kohberger for Daughters’ Urn Costs

In a recent ruling, an Idaho state judge determined that Bryan Kohberger must cover the costs of urns for two University of Idaho students he murdered. This decision follows a request from prosecutors for Kohberger to reimburse the families of Kaylee Goncalves and Maddie Mogen approximately $3,000 for the urns that hold their ashes.
Background of the Case
Kohberger is facing serious charges in connection with the brutal killings of four students in November 2022. He accepted a plea deal in June, which spared him the death penalty in exchange for a guilty plea. The deal requires him to pay over $30,000 in restitution.
Judge’s Ruling
Despite Kohberger’s defense claiming he lacks the financial means to pay additional restitution, Judge Steven Hippler ruled that he could raise money through donations or secure employment while incarcerated. The judge referenced that Kohberger had previously collected nearly $29,000 from various donations since his arrest.
Sources of Funds
- Family contributions to communicate with him in jail.
- Public donations, which have reportedly decreased since he pled guilty.
Judge’s Assessment
Judge Hippler noted that it is likely for Kohberger to continue receiving donations in the future, primarily due to contributions from his family. He expressed optimism regarding Kohberger finding work while in prison to help meet his financial obligations.
This case has garnered national attention, particularly due to the cross-country manhunt that followed the tragic stabbings. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on restitution for the families affected by this tragic event.
