NJ Man’s Death Linked to Tick Bite-Induced ‘Meat Allergy,’ Researchers Report

Researchers at the University of Virginia have reported a troubling case linking a tick bite to a severe meat allergy in New Jersey. This incident marks the first known death attributed to a meat allergy induced by a tick bite.

Understanding the Meat Allergy

Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills, a prominent figure in this research, discovered that bites from Lone Star ticks can increase sensitivity to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule present in mammalian meat. This heightened sensitivity can result in allergic reactions, including rashes, nausea, and vomiting shortly after consuming meat.

Incident Overview

A New Jersey man tragically passed away in the summer of 2024 after eating a hamburger. His decline began weeks prior during a camping trip where he experienced severe abdominal pain and vomiting after a steak dinner. Despite seeming healthy, his symptoms escalated during a barbecue, following which he collapsed.

  • Initial Symptoms: Severe stomach pain after the steak dinner.
  • Incident at Barbecue: Collapsed after eating a burger.
  • Emergency Response: Paramedics transported him to the hospital, but he later died.

Link to Tick Bites

Initially deemed “sudden unexplained death,” the autopsy prompted further investigation due to family concerns. The investigation revealed that although there were no recent tick bites, the deceased had suffered numerous chigger bites, believed to be linked to Lone Star ticks.

Testing confirmed a severe alpha-gal reaction, resembling anaphylactic shock. Researchers speculate that other factors, such as alcohol consumption and recent physical activity, may have exacerbated his severe allergic response.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you’ve experienced a tick bite, be vigilant about the following symptoms:

  • Severe abdominal pain within 3–5 hours after eating beef, pork, or lamb.
  • Tick bites that remain itchy for over a week.

Risk Awareness

Residents in areas where Lone Star ticks are prevalent should be particularly cautious. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that these ticks are widespread, extending along the East Coast and into central Texas.

Taking Precautions

For those who suffer moderate reactions like hives after consuming meat, proper dietary management can help control symptoms. Continuous research and awareness are crucial in addressing this emerging health risk related to tick bites and meat allergies.

The findings have been shared in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and preventive measures.
