Province Allocates Traffic-Calming Funds Ahead of Speed Camera Ban

The Ontario government has announced a significant investment of $210 million aimed at enhancing road safety. This funding focuses specifically on traffic-calming measures in school zones and community safety zones.

Investment in Traffic-Calming Measures

This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public safety just before the province enforces a ban on speed cameras. The ban will take effect on November 14, under Bill 56, known as the Building a More Competitive Economy Act.

Immediate Funding from the Road Safety Initiatives Fund

The Ministry of Transportation reported that $42 million from the Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF) will be allocated immediately. This funding will support the installation of:

  • Speed bumps
  • Raised crosswalks
  • Roundabouts
  • High-visibility signage
  • Increased police enforcement in affected areas

Future Funding Opportunities for Municipalities

Starting early next year, eligible municipalities will have the opportunity to apply for further funding from the RSIF. They will need to submit their construction plans for additional traffic-calming infrastructure.

This strategic allocation of funds is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists in high-traffic areas following the discontinuation of speed cameras.
