Storm Claudia to Drench Cheltenham with 30mm+ Rain Before November Event

Rain is set to impact Cheltenham ahead of the upcoming November meeting. More than 30mm of rain is forecasted from Thursday evening through Friday. Currently, the ground conditions are categorized as good to soft. The Old course will be in use for the entire three-day event.
Storm Claudia on the Way
On Thursday morning, the clerk of the course, Jon Pullin, noted that the forecasts indicated up to 20-30mm of rain. However, he reported that updates now suggest significantly more precipitation could arrive with Storm Claudia late Thursday. He stated, “We’re perfectly raceable at the moment, but we do have Storm Claudia moving in.”
Recent weather alerts include a yellow severe weather warning affecting much of England and Wales. In addition to heavy rainfall, gusty winds exceeding 40mph are anticipated during racing on Friday. Racegoers have been advised to check Cheltenham’s website and social media channels for updates on track conditions.
Potential Impact on Racing
- If significant rainfall occurs before racing on Friday, the ground will likely be soft.
- Heavy rain can alter conditions, making races more challenging.
- Groundstaff have faced difficulties in recent months, particularly during the Showcase meeting.
Last-minute changes to the race card have been made. The cross-country chase was called off due to unraceable conditions and has been replaced by a veterans’ race scheduled for 1:45 PM.
Outlook for Cheltenham Event
Looking ahead, the forecast appears more favorable for the remaining days of the meeting. Pullin expressed optimism, stating, “It certainly feels like the challenges keep coming, but that’s what we’re here for.” Rain is expected to taper off late Friday, leaving dry conditions for Saturday and Sunday.
Key Events
The highlight of the opening day is the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at 2:55 PM, featuring the star runner Jonbon, who aims for his third consecutive victory in this event.
Other venues across the area are also facing rain. Southwell anticipates 10-20mm of rainfall, while Uttoxeter is expecting 15-30mm by Saturday morning. Despite variable conditions, no inspections have yet been called for the racing meetings throughout Britain.
