TalkTV Fires Mike Graham Over Racist Facebook Post Allegation

Mike Graham, a presenter for TalkTV, has been dismissed from his morning show after facing backlash over a racially charged Facebook post. The incident led to his temporary suspension in October 2023.
Controversial Social Media Post
The controversy began when Graham’s Facebook account displayed a graphic that juxtaposed a statue of Winston Churchill with an image of a crowded Tube carriage. The accompanying caption included offensive and racist language, prompting widespread outrage.
Graham, aged 65, claimed his account was hacked and that he was not responsible for the post. He stated, “It contained words that I would never write and an opinion I don’t share.” Despite this defense, an almost identical post appeared on his Twitter account shortly before the Facebook entry.
TalkTV’s Response
After reviewing the situation, TalkTV confirmed that Graham would not return to his role following the “abhorrent and vile post.” His suspension led to fellow presenter Jeremy Kyle taking over the morning program.
Initially, Graham agreed to an independent investigation. However, he reportedly failed to cooperate fully, prompting TalkTV executives to terminate his employment.
Public Reaction and Apology
- Graham expressed gratitude towards his supporters via social media, stating, “Thank you to all of you brilliant listeners and viewers.”
- He also issued a personal apology for cancelling a scheduled show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Recent Incidents Leading to Controversy
Before his dismissal, Graham had criticized London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, after experiencing a car break-in. He described London as a “bereft city,” lamenting the dangers of living there. His outspoken criticisms have frequently sparked discussions around safety and governance in the capital.
This situation illustrates the precarious balance public figures must maintain between free expression and sensitivity towards their audience. With Graham’s exit from TalkTV, the impact of social media on a presenter’s career is starkly highlighted.
