Oilers Face Bigger Challenges Than Goaltending

The Edmonton Oilers face numerous challenges this season, with goaltending being one of many concerns. Despite some criticism, goaltender Stuart Skinner has performed reasonably well, posting a 2.54 goals-against average (GAA) and an .899 save percentage (SV%) in ten starts. Backup Calvin Pickard, however, has struggled, recording a 3.42 GAA and an .850 SV% in five starts.

Goaltending Performance in Context

Skinner’s performance, while not elite, is more favorable compared to other goalies in the league, such as Jeremy Swayman, Ilya Sorokin, and Juuse Saros. All have similar or worse statistics despite higher salary expectations.

  • Stuart Skinner: 2.54 GAA, .899 SV%
  • Calvin Pickard: 3.42 GAA, .850 SV%
  • Jeremy Swayman: .897 SV%
  • Ilya Sorokin: .879 SV%
  • Juuse Saros: .900 SV%

Team Offense Needs Improvement

Beyond goaltending, the Oilers struggle offensively. With star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, their current scoring output is disappointing.

  • 29th in expected goals per 60 minutes
  • 27th in scoring chances per 60 minutes
  • 31st in high-danger chances per 60 minutes
  • 24th in shot attempts per 60 minutes

These statistics starkly contrast their performance last season, where they ranked among the best in the league. Currently, they generate only 2.31 expected goals and 8.82 high-danger chances per 60 minutes at even strength.

Power Play Effectiveness

Despite scoring an average of 3.07 goals per game, the Oilers owe a large part of this success to their top-ranked power play. They need to enhance their five-on-five game to maintain consistency throughout the season.

Turnovers Impacting Game Outcomes

The Oilers have been plagued by costly turnovers, which shift momentum and lead to high-danger scoring opportunities for opponents. Even though Skinner has made crucial saves, such as preserving leads against the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars, these errors have negatively impacted games.

In their recent game against the Stars, the Oilers squandered a two-goal lead due to continued giveaway issues. Despite having fewer shots allowed per game, the quality of the chances given up was alarming.

Moving Forward

To improve, the Oilers must focus on correcting their turnover issues and enhancing offensive generation at even strength. With crucial games on the horizon, including a matchup against the Colorado Avalanche, addressing these challenges will be vital for the team’s success this season.
