Chargers’ Alt Undergoes Season-Ending Ankle Surgery

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Joe Alt is set to undergo season-ending ankle surgery due to a high right ankle sprain. This injury occurred during the Chargers’ recent victory over the Tennessee Titans, specifically in the second quarter when defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day fell onto Alt’s right ankle.

This marks the second time this season that Alt has suffered a high ankle sprain. He previously exited the first quarter in Week 4 against the New York Giants and subsequently missed three games. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his concern for Alt, stating, “I feel bad for Joe, but I know it’s going to be OK.”

Impact on the Chargers’ Offensive Line

The Chargers’ offensive line is facing significant challenges this season. Alt’s absence paired with other injuries has left the team shorthanded. Pro Bowl tackle Rashawn Slater is also out, having suffered a season-ending patellar tendon rupture during training camp.

Right guard Mekhi Becton, a key offseason signing, has faced injuries as well and missed the latest game due to a knee issue. In addition, right tackle Bobby Hart exited the game against the Titans due to groin and ankle injuries. Harbaugh commented that he does not believe Hart will require a stint on injured reserve.

Performance Without Key Players

Alt’s absence has noticeably affected team performance. The Chargers have struggled in both their running game and their ability to protect quarterback Justin Herbert. They maintain a 4-0 record when Alt plays the entire game, compared to a 2-3 record when he does not. Herbert’s QBR also reflects this impact—80 with Alt on the field but only 56 without him.

Injuries Affecting Other Positions

  • Najee Harris: Suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture against the Giants.
  • Omarion Hampton: Sustained an ankle injury in Week 5, currently on injured reserve.
  • Hassan Haskins: Placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury prior to the Titans game.

This string of injuries forced the Chargers to use their fourth, fifth, and sixth-string running backs in the match against the Titans. Harbaugh acknowledged the adversity and emphasized the team’s commitment to improving and persevering through challenges.

As the Chargers navigate the remainder of the season, they will need to adapt quickly to the formidable injuries their roster has faced. The team’s ability to overcome these obstacles could define their chances in the upcoming games.
