Trey Benson Injury Update: When Will Cardinals RB Return?

The Arizona Cardinals are facing significant challenges as they deal with injuries affecting key players. One of the most notable absences is running back Trey Benson, who has been sidelined for three consecutive games due to a knee injury.

Trey Benson Injury Update: When Will Cardinals RB Return?

Trey Benson suffered his injury in Week 4 while starting against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football. This came after he took over as the starting running back when James Conner was ruled out for the season with an ankle injury sustained in Week 3 versus the San Francisco 49ers.

As per reports, Benson underwent surgery to repair his meniscus. His recovery has kept him on injured reserve (IR), which requires him to miss a minimum of four games. Benson will miss his fourth game when the Cardinals play the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9.

Expected Return Timeline

The Cardinals have not provided an updated timeline on Benson’s recovery since early October. Initially, the team indicated he could be sidelined for 4 to 6 weeks. Coach Jonathan Gannon mentioned on November 1 that Benson is progressing well, stating, “He’s doing well. He’s getting better.” However, Benson has yet to return to practice.

If Benson continues to progress, he could be eligible to return in Week 10, after a five-week recovery period due to the team’s Week 8 bye. His return is highly anticipated as he was the leading rusher for the Cardinals in the first four games, amassing 160 yards on 29 carries.

Current Running Back Situation

With Benson’s absence, the Cardinals have had to rely on other players to fill the gap:

  • Bam Knight: Currently leads the backfield with 64 yards and one touchdown from 17 carries in his last game.
  • Emari Demercado: Returning this week after missing Week 7 due to an ankle injury, he is expected to support Knight.
  • D’Ernest Johnson: Briefly added to the practice squad, he was released on October 28 and subsequently signed by the New England Patriots.

The Cardinals’ offensive struggles have been exacerbated by the injuries to both Benson and quarterback Kyler Murray. Benson’s return could serve as a crucial boost for a team that needs to turn its season around.
