South Florida Family Sues Royal Caribbean for Cruise Balcony Death

Royal Caribbean is facing a wrongful death lawsuit following the tragic overboard incident involving Dulcie White, 66, during a Taylor Swift-themed cruise. This incident occurred on October 22, 2024. White’s family alleges that excessive alcohol service contributed to her unfortunate fall from the ship, as her body remains missing at sea one year later.
Details of the Incident
Dulcie White and her daughter, Megan Klewin, were on a cruise aboard the “Allure of the Seas,” where White had purchased the cruise line’s deluxe drink package, offering unlimited alcoholic beverages. According to Klewin, her mother consumed seven alcoholic drinks over about six hours, leading to extreme intoxication.
Alcohol Service Concerns
- White reportedly displayed clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and difficulty standing.
- Several passengers voiced concerns about her condition and assisted her back to her cabin.
Moments Before the Fall
After returning to their cabin, White headed towards the balcony where they had stored luggage for extra space. Klewin recalled, “I saw her back. She was seated on the edge of the balcony…” Before Klewin could intervene, White fell overboard.
Response from Royal Caribbean
The cruise line did not initiate a search or rescue operation for White after her fall, as per the lawsuit. A spokesperson from Royal Caribbean stated they do not comment on ongoing litigation.
Family’s Quest for Accountability
Feeling a heavy burden of grief, Klewin expressed that the situation will haunt their family forever. Their attorney, Spencer Aronfeld, stated that while the High Seas Act limits court winnings, the family is seeking accountability rather than financial compensation. They hope a positive outcome from this case might lead cruise lines to reconsider the offering of all-you-can-drink alcohol packages.
Broader Implications
Aronfeld emphasized the need for change, stating, “A victory would encourage Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines to eliminate these drink packages.” The family’s pursuit of justice serves as a reminder of cruise lines’ responsibility to ensure passenger safety amidst alcohol consumption.
