Wimbledon Park Secures Permanent License for Fireworks Management

A well-known fireworks event in South London has officially secured a permanent license, ensuring it can be held responsibly. The annual festivities, known as Fireworks in the Park, will continue at Wimbledon Park, moving from a yearly license renewal to a permanent one.

Event Details and Licensing Process

On October 21, Wandsworth Council granted Merton a premises license to conduct the event for one day each year. Merton Council had sought this permission from Wandsworth because part of the fireworks area lies within that borough.

  • Event Name: Fireworks in the Park
  • Date This Year: Saturday, November 8
  • Application Hearing Date: October 21

The licensing committee acknowledged the event as a cherished community highlight, enjoyed by thousands annually. Daz Guerin, head of cultural events at Merton, emphasized the importance of the event in connecting diverse groups of residents from Wandsworth and Merton.

Community Support and Concerns

Initially, the licensing application raised concerns among local residents. It sought permission for alcohol sales, music, and entertainment from 11 am to 11 pm any day of the year. However, licensing officers reassured residents that the actual fireworks event would occur only once a year, typically in October or November.

The committee made amendments, allowing the event to start at 4:30 pm on weekdays and 11 am on weekends. This adjustment aims to balance the event’s needs with community interests, minimizing disruptions for local residents.

Additional Event Features

Fireworks in the Park will feature various attractions to enhance the experience:

  • Funfair
  • Bar
  • Street food vendors
  • Live entertainment

By receiving a permanent license, organizers can ensure that all aspects of the event are professionally managed. This includes risk assessment and adherence to safety protocols, allowing for a festive environment that can be enjoyed by everyone.

The granting of this license marks a new chapter for Fireworks in the Park and reassures the community of responsible event management for years to come.
