Aldi Recalls Popular Chocolate Snack with ‘Do Not Eat’ Alert

Aldi has issued a recall for its Dairyfine Crispy Choc Um’s chocolate snack due to potential health risks for individuals with peanut allergies. This popular product, reminiscent of M&M’s, could contain undeclared peanuts. Customers are urged to return any packages to their local Aldi store for a full refund.

Details of the Recall

The recall was enacted after Aldi was notified that Dairyfine Crispy Choc Um’s might not accurately declare peanuts on the ingredient label. Anaphylaxis UK, a charity focused on nut allergies, confirmed the product’s unsuitability for those allergic to peanuts.

Health Implications

  • Approximately 6% of UK adults have some form of food allergy, totaling around 2.4 million people.
  • About 1 in 50 children in the UK are reported to have a peanut allergy, a rate that is increasing.
  • Peanut allergies have increased three-fold in recent decades.

Recommendations for Prevention

Experts suggest that introducing peanut products into infants’ diets between four to six months could significantly reduce the prevalence of peanut allergies. A study by the University of Southampton revealed a correlation between severe eczema, egg allergies, and the likelihood of developing peanut allergies in children.

To lower the risk, it is advised to give infants with eczema peanut butter or other peanut-based snacks starting at four months old. This could potentially decrease peanut allergy rates by up to 77%.

Aldi’s Response

In a formal notice released, Aldi expressed concern over the potential health risk and apologized for not meeting their usual product standards. They thanked customers for their understanding and cooperation during the recall process.

Recent Recalls

This incident follows another recent recall by Aldi involving Gianni’s Cheeky Monkey Ice Cream, which was taken off the shelves due to undeclared wheat, posing risks for individuals with coeliac disease or gluten allergies.
