Massachusetts SNAP Benefits Freeze: Find Food Assistance and Donation Options

As the government shutdown looms, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is scheduled to expire on November 1. This situation places over 1 million residents in Massachusetts and 42 million individuals nationwide in a precarious position, dependent on food assistance.
Massachusetts Response to SNAP Funding Freeze
In response, Massachusetts is among 25 states suing the Trump administration to ensure continued benefits. Governor Maura Healey has announced critical measures to aid local communities affected by this freeze.
- The state is providing a $4 million emergency fund to local food banks.
- A partnership with the United Way has generated $1.3 million for food pantries and community organizations in just one week.
Governor Healey emphasized community solidarity, urging residents to support their neighbors and coworkers who are SNAP recipients facing food insecurity. “There are folks all among us who are SNAP recipients who are going to be impacted this weekend,” she remarked.
Finding Food Assistance in Massachusetts
To assist those affected, Healey’s office has launched a dedicated website, Mass.gov/SNAPFreeze. This resource connects residents with food assistance programs. Additionally, Project Bread offers a free, confidential hotline, the “FoodSource Hotline,” available at 1-800-645-8333 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The website also lists four key regional food banks:
- Greater Boston Food Bank
- Worcester County Food Bank
- Food Bank of Western Massachusetts
- Merrimack Valley Food Bank
How to Donate to Food Banks
Several initiatives are underway to boost donations to food banks.
- The United Response Fund is channeling contributions to food banks and community organizations.
- People can donate directly to regional food banks via their respective websites:
Farmers and retail businesses with surplus food are encouraged to connect with Spoonfuls, a food recovery operation, for donations to pantries and shelters.
In a notable local initiative, the creators of a giant Halloween display in Ashland are collaborating with the Ashland Food Pantry to gather nonperishable food donations.
The upcoming SNAP benefits freeze has highlighted urgent needs within Massachusetts. However, concerted community efforts aim to mitigate food insecurity and support vulnerable populations during this challenging period.
