Türkiye Buys 20 Typhoon Jets, Securing 20,000 UK Jobs in Major Deal

Türkiye has finalized an £8 billion agreement with the UK for the purchase of 20 Typhoon fighter jets, marking a significant milestone in defense partnerships between the two nations. This deal, the largest fighter jet export agreement in nearly two decades, was formalized during the Prime Minister’s inaugural visit to Ankara.

Key Highlights of the Türkiye Typhoon Jet Deal

  • Value: £8 billion
  • Number of Jets: 20 Typhoon fighter jets
  • Workforce Impact: Supports approximately 20,000 UK jobs
  • Production Locations: Warton, Salmesbury, Bristol, and Edinburgh
  • First Delivery: Expected in 2030

This agreement is a substantial boost for UK defense manufacturing and the local economy. The Prime Minister, during his visit, met with Turkish military and RAF pilots to discuss the jets’ contributions to European security. Notably, the deal will sustain production lines and skilled jobs at BAE Systems and other manufacturers involved in Typhoon component production.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the deal goes beyond simply acquiring aircraft. It establishes a stronger defense and industrial partnership between the UK and Türkiye, which is a crucial NATO ally. By enhancing Türkiye’s combat capabilities, the agreement aims to bolster NATO’s collective deterrence in the region.

The Typhoon program not only supports jobs directly but also stimulates economic activity in the South West of England, with significant contributions from companies like Rolls-Royce in Bristol and Leonardo in Edinburgh.

Broader Context of Defense Cooperation

The Typhoon deal coincides with other significant contracts, such as the UK’s Type 26 frigates chosen by Norway, which injects an additional £10 billion into the economy, ensuring thousands of more jobs. These agreements exemplify the UK government’s strategy to transform defense into a cornerstone for economic growth and employment.

Charles Woodburn, CEO of BAE Systems, emphasized that Türkiye’s acquisition of Typhoon jets opens a new chapter in UK-Türkiye relations, enhancing the operational support the jets deliver across Europe and the Middle East. This partnership underscores the importance of sovereign skills in maintaining robust defense and security within the UK.

As this landmark deal unfolds, it underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to mutual defense objectives and the economic benefits that stem from such collaborations.
