DOJ Charges Indian National in Lufthansa Flight Stabbing from Chicago to Germany

The Department of Justice has charged an Indian national in connection with a disturbing incident on a Lufthansa flight traveling from Chicago to Germany. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 25, 2025, shortly after meal service.

Details of the Incident

Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, 28, allegedly stabbed two teenage boys during the flight. A 17-year-old was resting in a middle seat when he was attacked. According to the DOJ, Usiripalli struck this boy in the shoulder area.

Another 17-year-old, seated in a nearby center row, was also assaulted. Usiripalli reportedly stabbed him in the back of the head.

Passenger Reactions and Flight Diversion

As the situation escalated, flight crew members intervened. The suspect then reportedly made a gesture simulating a gun, pointing it at his mouth and pulling an imaginary trigger. He also allegedly slapped a female passenger and tried to slap a crew member.

The flight was diverted to Boston Logan International Airport due to Usiripalli’s erratic behavior. He was taken into custody upon landing.

Charges and Legal Status

  • Usiripalli is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm.
  • This charge falls under the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.
  • If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Flight Details

The flight, designated LH431, was a Boeing 747-8 with 363 passengers on board. Following the incident, the flight to Frankfurt was canceled, and passengers required accommodations in Boston.

Lufthansa issued a statement expressing regret for the inconvenience caused and highlighting their commitment to passenger safety. They noted that all passengers were assisted with hotel accommodations and rebooking on the next available flights.

Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli was admitted to the United States on a student visa; however, he currently lacks lawful status. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date. The DOJ has requested that any inquiries about the incident be directed to local law enforcement.
