Whitehorse Hosts Arctic Winter Games Opening Ceremony

The Arctic Winter Games have officially commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony in Whitehorse, Yukon. This year, nearly 300 athletes from the Yukon are participating, with the majority hailing from the city of Whitehorse. Communities including Dawson City, Carmacks, Watson Lake, and Burwash Landing are also represented.
Participants and Teams
This year’s games feature significant representation from the Northwest Territories, with approximately 356 athletes making the journey to Whitehorse. A group of cultural delegates is accompanying the athletes to present their unique talents.
International Representation
- Dene Games and More: Team Kalaallit Nunaat from Greenland has been a participant since 1990, bringing 59 members to the competition. They are competing in a variety of sports, including snowboarding and badminton.
- Team Sápmi: This team is composed of 53 members, featuring 36 athletes and three cultural representatives. Participants hail from Sápmi, encompassing northern regions of Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
- Team Alaska: As a founding participant in the Arctic Winter Games, Team Alaska maintains a longstanding tradition in these games.
